The year 2014 was another year that wowed us with its plethora od sleek gadgets and awesome devices. So at the end of it all, its just normal that we give you the pick of the bunch, five smart phones that held their own amongst the hundreds of devices that were produced this year. Say hello to the juggernauts:
(5. BLACKBERRY PASSPORT
The Passport is a weird looking smartphone, yes, and that's one of the reasons its on this list. With a keyboard that has never been seen before under a perfectly 4.5 inch square screen, the Blackberry passport is a must have for the stylish ones amongst us. With a beast of a battery, a sweet IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen that can show 16M colors and displays a whooping 453 pixel per inch. It totes a decent 13 MP front camera that supports optical image stabilization, Geo-tagging and face detection. And a 2MP front camera,
The ability to install and run and Android application via SNAP is bolstered by the heavy engines under the passports hood. With a Qualcomm MSM8974AA Snapdragon 801 processor, Quad-core 2.26 GHz Krait 400 CPU and an Adreno 330 Graphics Processing Unit coupled with an internal storage of 32 GB and a whole 3 GB of RAM.
Holding the Blackberry passport might take a while of getting used to, either to hold or use thanks to its keyboard but like all new ideas, once you have gotten a hold of it you start to think how you lived all this while without it. This phone is one of 2014 biggest devices take it or leave it.
(4. iPhone 6 Plus
Some people don't believe the Iphone 6 plus is the best Iphone ever, well we don't, the first Apple phablet is filled with all the things we love to see in a phone. The Iphone 6 Plus takes all the best bits of the iPhone 6 - design, beautiful UI, strong camera performance - and improves upon them by packing an even better camera, a Full HD screen 401 ppi and much larger battery. Now which is better? There is no con for this phone, except if you are looking at its size and maybe its price. It houses an A8 64-bit processor, 1GB of RAM, M8 motion coprocessors and 8MP rear facing cameras - but the snapper on the iPhone 6 Plus benefits from OIS (optical image stabilisation). Don't be deceived with specs here, the Iphone 6 plus can rival any android device with even a 3gig ram and shoots clearer pictures than some 20mega pixel cameras. If you haven't heard of the magic that an Iphone performs just sitting on your palm then you are either from the village or from the boondocks of un-civilization. The Iphone 6 plus is five times more than the Iphone 5s. Just think of that when you try to imagine how awesome it is.
(3. Samsung Galaxy Note 4
With the Note 4, the samsung brand has managed to put so much into one big phone. The main thing is the screen: Super AMOLED technology combined with QHD resolution means a very sharp display that shows everything in all its glory, and one that we just can't take our eyes off. The stylus is back-bigger and better, S Pen is here to help you clip and jot all day.. The camera is nice, the specs is next-gen. What else do you want from a phone? The Galaxy Note 4 has a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display, which has a 2,560 x 1,440 native resolution but that still gives a jaw dropping 515 pixels per inch. The stylus works beautifully on the screen, the S Pen writes with the comfortability.
Another amusing aspect to the Note 4 that gives it its massive followership is its multitasking screen modes. More than two apps can used simultaneously and can be run in split screen or resized to fit any space. Watching a video while browsing the web and checking your email also is simply a breeze. This is a functionality that isn’t supported on Android yet so its really nice to have. The Galaxy note 4 is a great device to have.
(2. Xperia Z3
Sony is now a household name the Xperia Z2 helped to do that but the Z3 is to make it remain on top. It has tried to work on the main strengths of the Xperia Z2, it now has a higher IP certification while the 20MP camera just snaps away and gives clearer images and videos. With a 5.2" Ips lcd screen at 1080 x 1920 pixels which displays a beastly 424 pixels per inch, the Xperia Z3 displays videos, games and pictures in colours even your LCD tv at home can only dream of if it comes to pure pixel per inch. LTE/4G connectivity is on board for that blazing speed you need to download Vampire diaries. Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Xperia UI buttered on takes care of the looks, being IP68 certified also has its benefits, with dust and water proof up to 1.5 meter and 30 minutes, this baby is surely a must have when we are at that pool party and you want to take underwater pics as you swim with "bae".
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset with quad-core 2.5GHz Krait 400 processor, Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB of RAM are the holy trinity that makes sure everything ticks in this device. A 20.7MP camera with a single LED flash that records 2160p video recording is also here and its assisted by a 2.2MP front-facing camera with 1080p video recording. Storage is either 16GB or 32GB built-in but is expandable via the microSD card slot. The Xperia Z3 will give any smartphone a run for its money, that's why its at number 2 on our list
(1. HTC One M8
Who else could take the number one spot than the HTC One M8? They often say the second album is the hardest, but the sequel to the all-dominating HTC One takes what's best of that phone and yet still re-invents new things that makes it a massive recommendation over the old model. The camera speed is crazily fast, the Duo Camera is smart as Sherlock, the Boomsound speakers upgrade is so on point and the design.........exquisite like HTC likes them to be.
The new Snapdragon 801 processor allows a better battery performance compared to the 600 of last year, and that also means that photos, apps and browsing also gets processed more quickly as well - even the front camera is much better. The lower megapixel camera allows faster shutter speeds though and the background de-focus ability make for some pretty looking snaps. No body has held this phone and not felt something for it, either the urge to own one or the urge to lend money to buy it, It's got top shelf specs, a sweet design and very innovative hardware where the competition is relying on software to do the same thing. The HTC One M8 is the best phone for 2014, it is a phone that shows imagination, creativity and real futuristic design, not to mention its specs are top notch too.
So there you have it, the best five phones for 2014. We know 2015 will be bigger and we just can't wait to get our hands on the goodies. Watch out for our piece on the "Top 5 tablets of 2015".
